Fear and greed: the two emotions that make you lose

Fear and greed are the two emotions that move markets and ruin traders: fear pulls you out of good trades too early, greed gets you into bad ones and makes you over-risk. It's not about eliminating them (impossible), but recognising them and not letting them decide for you.

How fear shows up

Fear has many faces in trading: closing a winning trade too soon "in case it turns", not entering a good signal for fear of losing, or freezing after a losing streak. Fear makes you prioritise avoiding short-term pain over following your plan. The result: you cut profits and miss the best trades.

How greed shows up

Greed is the other side: risking too much because "this one's obvious", not closing at your target because "it'll keep rising", or entering trades not in your plan for fear of missing the move (the famous FOMO). Greed makes you ignore risk when things go well, exactly when you should protect yourself most.

Why they're so powerful

It's not your weakness: it's biology. Your brain is designed to avoid losses and seek quick rewards, something useful for survival but poison for trading. That's why "wanting" to control them isn't enough. Against such a deep instinct, willpower almost always loses. You need a system, not more willpower.

What to do: system, not willpower

The solution isn't to feel less, it's to decide before you feel. If your plan defines in advance how much you risk, where you enter and where you exit, when the emotional moment comes you only have to execute what's already decided. The plan and the stop-loss aren't bureaucracy: they're the barriers that protect you from yourself the moment your brain pushes you toward error. The disciplined trader isn't the one who feels no fear, it's the one with a system that acts for them.

Where to start

Start with the simplest and most powerful: define your risk per trade in writing and always place the stop-loss when opening, not after. Those two rules, kept without exception, neutralise much of the damage fear and greed do. You don't have to win the battle against your emotions: you just have to take the wheel away from them.
